For 100 years the Queen Elizabeth Centre (QEC) has provided specialised care, support and guidance to help parents manage the many challenges that arise during early parenthood, from before birth until 48 months. QEC advocates child focused and family-centred practices underpinned by a philosophy that family is the principal source of care for children, offering services and programs that are culturally relevant and accessible to all clients. Public services are delivered at QEC's Noble Park site and/or through regional community bases.  We provide services to Victorian families and specialise in working with vulnerable families in our community.

 

We work in partnership with families to understand their challenges and develop strategies to overcome them. These are incorporated into an action plan that our staff work through with parents. These programs might include a one, five or ten day residential program at QEC Noble Park, intensive in home support or involvement in a ten week, or ongoing group program. Parents experience a real life in confidence when they experience these strategies in action. The action plan helps the family to continue to work on these strategies at home and embed the changes. The team at QEC also work with the families to connect them to services and support in their own communities.

 

Many of our families are exposed to serious adversity including family violence, trauma, alcohol and substances abuse and mental health problems leading to reduced capacity to provide safe, consisted parenting. Our programs support families to achieve better life outcomes for their children, transform and develop family resilience, community connections and develop stronger social capital, major determinants of individual and community health.

 

 

The Senior Early Parenting Practitioner (SEPP), is responsible for supporting vulnerable families in both the Cradle to Kinder and the Parenting Assessment and Skills Development Program.  The Cradle to Kinder program is an intensive long-term ante and post-natal family support and early parenting service for vulnerable young mothers and their children.  Cradle to Kinder services commence in pregnancy and continuing until the child reaches 4 years of age.  The Cradle to Kinder program is a partnership between QEC, Gippsland Lakes Community Health, Uniting Care , Orbost Regional Health and Yarram and District Health Services. The PASDS program works with families from birth to 3 who are at high risk of abuse and/or neglect who are referred through the DHHS Child Protection Service. 

 

As a SEPP, you will provide child-centred family focused case management and support to vulnerable young mothers and their children; undertake assessments; and provide a family casework service, working in partnership with families to achieve their goals.  You will enjoy a professional and supportive team environment and access to evidence-informed best-practice training and development opportunities.

The position will be based within the Bairnsdale region working closely with other partner agencies in providing family support services to vulnerable families to improve the safety, wellbeing and development of children.  

 

 

To be considered for this role you will have:

-A relevant tertiary qualification in Early Childhood Development, Infant Mental Health or equivalent, at diploma level or higher

-Sound understanding of the service system for vulnerable young parents and their children and experience in working in partnership with key agencies.

-Excellent practice experience and theoretical understanding of the issues facing highly vulnerable young parents in their ability to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children, particularly the priority access groups for Cradle to Kinder

-Highly developed understanding of child development and the factors that can impede a child's development

-Highly developed skills in active and assertive engagement for families who are reluctant to accept services, especially young people.

-Excellent organisational, time management skills, and ability to be self-directed.

-Highly developed skills and experience in risk and needs assessments and risk management.

-Demonstrated experience in relation to Family Action Planning and ability to think broadly and holistically in relation to interventions with families and children.

-Demonstrated ability to engage in critical reflective practice.
